I don’t know how things are in Japan but skipping college classes, then reading the material later is very common.

reasons consist of reading up the material later is easier, excercising your new freedom, or you just don’t feel like it

aside from a couple online classes, I never did this myself because I’m stupid and needed any sympathy I could get from the profs.

In the first one, two years, I also attended all lectures and closely followed them. Then they started to get repetitive, and I just attended them to see if the profs said anything new or not written on the slides. The rest of the time, I played games or just outright slept, sometimes in the front row, just in sight of the prof. Nobody cared.
