In the WN he bombed the shit out of the city. The dragons came during the night after the city had already been occupied.
Definitely the fire bombing of Tokyo. It's a Japanese story, after all.
The firebombing of tokyo would fit if it wasn't the 2 sides styles in the series, the enemy nation in this is almost definitely being referenced similar to nazi germany (though the mindgames they are trying to play on the fl could reference mengele or unit 731 to be fair), the firebombing of tokyo is generally viewed differently than the dresden bombings to a japanese viewer and would be likely far more detailed if that was the attempt, the ambiance seems to hint more at dresden to me though.
So that is why modern wars are all fought with nukes.
Nukes are A not as usefui in warfare as people are led to believe and B the reason why nukes aren't used is once one uses them, EVERYONE uses them, this is also why your not seeing too many of iran's ally's up in arms about iran's nuclear facilities being hit outside of finger waving and bluster, NO ONE wants nuclear proliferation because nukes are basically a, pardon the way of saying it but, the "fuck you" button, the moment you use one, your country is doomed, yes you might take out your enemy with you, but your also gonna be nuked as well, this is why no nation uses them, the use of nukes isn't to actually use them, it's to threaten to use them, the last thing any nation wants is for a country to actually USE one, because then they have to use theirs and all hell breaks loose.
Now unlike what people think, nukes are NOT a doomsday weapon, even if every nuke was used civilization would likely survive as would most of the countries hit, but their cities would be devistated and the global economy collapse, supply chain collapse etc, it would technically end the world as we know it, but that's "as we know it", civilization would continue, most nations would continue, but the world order and power structures would collapse.
Basically total nuclear war would likely lead to the collapse of many of the world's governments into anarchy, which would be the real threat to civilization, not the nukes themselves.
