So... Wait... Huh? Does he want to do this or not? It's like he just goes back and forth for no reason

It's not really "no reason". He hates fantasy species in general because they're responsible for his family's death (least, I think that was his backstory), along with a ton of death and destruction.

But then he got to know some of them and formed a bond with them, regardless of how superficial; he's subconsciously making mental exceptions for those he's "close" to.

I hate to make the comparison, given how cheap it is, but you see it a lot in real life with actual racists. They devalue or just straight up despise another race for whatever reason makes sense to them, but then jump through a ton of mental hoops to exempt certain members of that race because they know them.

A perfect, albeit anecdotal, example is my uncle: dude is omega bigoted. A friend of mine for 20 years came out as trans about 10 years ago and while we were all joking with my grandmother at her (my grandmother's) house, he came in and started spouting about how he didn't want "those types" in my grandmother's house. In front of my grandmother and my friends.

He has also repeatedly said that if his daughter (who is part Hispanic) ever came home with a black guy or a Mexican guy, he'd beat her ass and then disown her. He regularly uses the N-word (hard R, at that), along with numerous other slurs, and calls Mexicans lazy.

That same guy will then turn around and say the Mexican guys working for him are some of the best people he knows and will regularly take anything they say as gospel because he considers them his friends.

The human mind is just fakkin' weird, mate.

So, Japan often produces manga where the main characters are humans who are hilariously outmatch by some fantasy creatures/beings. Be it giant insects on a island, elves who treat them like cattle, or a demon tribe whose whole mindset is consuming the weak; humans get wrecked in some crazy ways and we're meant to feel helpless with the MC and root for them to find a way to survive.
Reading this, im actually hoping the humans lose in this situation because there's nothing for me to like about this MC. Not just because of his actions, but his personality. My bias might also be that i was expecting him in the beginning to learn about the nature of the mythical creatures, and grow to live with 'em and rebel against the human military (who'd make sense as a 2ndary antagonist).
I don't know, at the end of the day, even with fanservice sprinkled here and there, im not sure how long a series like this would last.
