He has trouble hearing out of his right ear huh... interesting... I am sort of similar... I am blind in my right eye so I feel some amount of kinship with him. This series also got me thinking... is it really that common in Japan for a teenager to move to a relative alone like this? It is a pretty common trope, but... how realistic is it?

Yeah, it's a common trope in manga/anime, but not super realistic. In real life, teens in Japan usually only move in with relatives if there’s a serious reason, like loss of parents or school stuff. It’s mostly used to give characters more freedom.
