Miyabi was sure everyone would be too distracted by the metric shitton of Karons to notice he sucked at basic multiplication.
It could cripple the economy temporarily if all the carriage drivers, horse breeders, and carriage manufacturers / maintenance crews go out of business. It will take time for people to both adapt to and learn how to handle the new transportation repairs and maintenance. It's almost like he should have worked on making a Steam Engine instead.
That logic about the speedier trade 'destroying the economy', makes no sense, maybe it'd be bad for carriage drivers and their escorts, but it should increase trade and revenue. It would make more sense for an antagonist to say 'this will bust my monopoly'.
Thanks for the chapter!
That would require Market A to immediately restructure itself so that it ceases to be competition for B and deals in supporting it instead. That is not always possible and you should consider other issues, like simple refusal to change out of a sense of pride and/or tradition concerning the family business (these are nobles we're talking about, not venture capitalists). There would also be power balance considerations, since mass transportation has serious implication for troop logistics - a fellow noble who has bad blood with you might suddenly be able to deploy forces near your territory at a moment's notice, even though he's too far away to normally do it.I...what?
Maybe I missed that lesson in economics class, but my impression is that while some specific industries might suffer from a merging of two economies, a larger economy as a whole in general is healthier and more productive.
Even if producers in market A are objectively worse than Market B at making all products, they would have far less opportunity cost for that same reason and everyone gets more if Market B focuses on trading their most profitable products with Market A in exchange for whatever they diverted resources away from to do so.
If I were the guildmaster, I'd be drooling at the prospect of this train and scrambling for special trading privileges rather than any sort of interference.
I was originally going to assume that the train would need 240 enchanters to move based on the 1/8th model, but I forgot about the Square-Cube law. Does x600 mean we need to hire 600 Karons or 30x600?
Regardless, this is also a good thing for Crafters because it means they get to be employed en masse. If Miyabi can figure out a way for further power engines to be easily added, they could even be bulk-hired for emergencies when the train needs extra horsepower.
