Maybe Mayumi died too just like Fujiko's husband or forgot Fujiko because she had Alzheimer's or something given their age. I see part of her still longs for the free spirited woman she fell in love with years ago that's why she stared at her phone a little longer before picking it up realizing it's her son, just a little sad though they ended up for the reason of Mayumi sleeps with different people. She loves her husband but not in love with him because he's nice a man and treats her kindly with respect but to say she's happy is only half hearted.

oh girl..... and to be fair she is happy, not as happy as she could be but it did leave her with a determination that never quite burned out.

It's just, man, I can't help but think about how much better things could have gone.

That hurt to read. Still being obsessed with your lover of three months from decades ago, and thinking of her as you go through the motions of your life... The beginning where she rejects having her family over for the holidays makes me think she's anticipating the possibility of having her lover over again. Battan loves rubbing our face in the dirt of comphet reality. Thank you so much for getting this up! I'm thrilled Battan is participating in Yuri Hime now.

Always bisexual, always...
The depiction of bisexuals in yuri manga is awful.

Most of the time, they cheat, lie, seduce anyone who is single or not, always partying, drinking, smoking, put a lit of effort on their figure, like to please people, have multiple relationships at the same but never asked their partners if they want to be in an open relationship and SEX, a lot of SEX.
Whenever their are someone they want to fuck they will always achieve there goal whatever it cost them. They do whatever they want without taking in consideration anyone feelings. Always showed as special and/or misunderstood par others.

Putting that aside, this story have some similarities with others Battant stories.
One of them is women fighting each other over jealousy, comparing each other (even though it's the MC who feel inferior). Her complex of inferiority prevent her to be in a relationship with the person she wanted.
SHe comfort herself in her hetero normal, boring, lifestyle while waiting, longing, for the day she will reunite with Miss Red Lipstick.

A way to say "don't put some stupid obstacles on your way to happiness".

Not always, but well it true that there are a lot. And i think it is just an unintentional systemic.
not that the depiction of bisexual in Yuri manga is awful, but the awful is why they are bisexual.

Say, Yuri with no need to go drama, cheating, etc... there are less reason say a girl also into a guy, especially a lot of Yuri is subtext, and reach to Yuri after awhile with no need to specific the character's sexuality.
one other thing is Asian don't have hook up culture, most of story is the character's first love, even irl is not always this way, but in media, it ideally portray this way, So it is not expected that you have at least have few relationship in your life.
So unless you intentional want to included a Bi or specific describe it in the story. Mean there are not a lot of chance and reason to find a bi person to begin with.

In other hand, when you want to write a story with cheat and awful, this specific situation make us know specifically, by who she cheat to. Which give a lot more chance to find out they are bi. So they are awful is the reason we found out bi, not that they are bi so they have to depicted as awful

if you can count on Battan for anything it’s bittersweet yuri with an edge of compulsory heterosexuality

For all of you people bitching about this.... This was the way life WAS back in the Showa era in Japan. They're catching up... slowly, but they're catching up. This was an incredibly well-written story (sasuga Battan) and was fairly accurate for opinions and way-of-life back then... You can really tell how she felt about the way things were. She was just putting up with the way things were forced on her (yes, whe was forced into an arranged marriage, which was common back then). There were monents of happiness in her life, but there were still regrets... The majority of people back then just accepted that that was how life was. It's easy for us living (mostly) in Western culture to be "armchair quarterbacks" (an American football handegg term for people who just watch somebody or a situation and talk about how much better they could do what the professional does) and say she should've done X or Y, but if we were put in the same situation in the same time period as they were, we would've probably done the same thing as they did....
Now, I believe she really DID love the girl who cheated on her and still does, by evidence of her still pining for the lover ー that she had for like 3 months ー decades later. Is this a yuri story? Yes. Did it turn out like the majority of you people wat it to? Probably not. However, it's a very well-written story and a big thanks to Battan (and the TL) for writing (and translating) it.

Mayumi's main characteristic is her free-spirited nature, which results in her being a liar and a cheater. That she's bisexual is entirely irrelevant to that fact. In fact, it's only mentioned in once over the span of two lines.

Fujiko, however, is also clearly bisexual. Her dedicated love for Mayumi is covered over the course of multiple pages. The same can be said of her love and dedication for her deceased husband.

So I'd argue that the depiction of bisexuals in this particular yuri manga is fine. Some people lie and cheat. Some people don't.

But of course everyone cheat, being straight, bi, pan, gay, lesbian or whatever.
But, in case of Yuri in general, most of the time the one who cheat happen to be bisexual. And in my message, I'm not only talking only about cheating but the character of the bisexual in general.

I'm mean every bisexual are not sex-crazy, open minded in relationships, extravert, partying everytime, insensible, drunkard person in real life. But that's stereotype we mostly found in Yuri. And even I would say in a lot of Media (Mangas, anime, series, movies, books, etc ...)

In the case of this story, the only who actually state her sexual orientation is Miss Red Lipstick. The MC could be straight with one exception for this woman, She never stated her sexual orientation and never loved or go out with another woman besides her.
For me, there's only one actual bisexual. And for the MC, we don't know, maybe she's straight with lesbian tendencies for specific women? or bi but she never said it.

And I would say, most of the protagonist in Yuri are like the MC. Most of the time, Authors dont stated their sexual orientation. They just love another girl/woman and that's it.
