the current reason is because they are a bunch of hypocrites. crime is ok as long as we do it. killing the innocents is ok as for they are (unwilling) martyrs.

so yeah currently its because the rumors says he does crime. but Mc also mentioned that she wasnt that fervorous in the original timeline.

Makes sense with the things they have done in the past in general. The church and all religions in general, for an absurd amount of time, has been used for control over the masses and not to actually spread its faith for a better life. Faith was nothing but a tool to accomplish all of this.
