Was Latos's mom in poor health? It would explain why they aren't making more children, preferably a son who could inherit naturally, with no need to break traditions or get an outside man to be the next head. Latos could return to being herself and seek a path of magic without needing to be care about the inheritance burden anymore, let alone a sudden, unexpected arranged marriage. She does care about her family, so she could keep supporting it in a more natural role, possible gaining enough personal fame that it alone would make enemies hesitate.

You can tell Rivea isn't interested in making friends, though. Perhaps he now hates Reese, fearing his daughter has fallen for him and is willing to abandon the family, ruining all of his plans. Yet he must maintain his proud face and act as if nothing could affect the plans. Or maybe he knows his own limits in social interactions and purposefully wants his wife to have a real discussion with Reese.

Physically no, but I think the death of her son greatly impacted her mentally.
I've seen that before where a family loses a child and it causes a psychological blockage that makes either one or both parents unable to conceive or even do the act.
