Totally unncessary lies and haphazard explanations. Adopted children have been a thing since before the civilization, so there's nothing to explain there. If Weiss and Zieg happened to come to such an event together, it's obvious there's something going on between them, but they don't particularly need to elaborate or anything. Just leave it to everyone's imagination. All those people are already busy with their imagination anyway. Even those two know themselves that if there wasn't anything going on between them, Zieg wouldn't be there and Lily wouldn't call her mama.

I dislike it when supposedly extremely hard-boiled people like Weiss talk too much and instead of trying to cut it short, even push a less experienced person to try to ad lib something intelligent on top of it. He should know much better.

I don't care what anyone says, i labsolutely love how these two dorks fumble in their attempts to keep the whole elf fiasco a secret
He's actually doing just fine, it's just one dork fumbling the ball.

It's actually really easy story to sell though "I liked Zieg this whole time so when I left, I kept in touch with her. She didn't get involved in romance since she was waiting for my return and we kind of promised ourselves to each other. Along my travels, I made an elf friend and tragically he and his wife died so I adopted their daughter. Zieg gladly decided to help me raise her as her adopted mother. And here we are."

Ahem, other things aside. I can see Medici (I don't like that name) daughter is going to have drills as she get older. They are already starting to form.

Cringe time?
Cringe is usually meant to be a secret between the few parties involved. Making cringe public is humiliation of the parties involved. Weiss is humiliating his potential waifu atm and I suspect she will get back at him with a ring and maybe a few restraints.
Weiss could have passed it off as "Yes, she was adopted after one of my adventures out in the world and Ziegline is filling in as her adoptive mother." But formal talks isn't his strong suit clearly and we should expect some shenanigans in the ensuing chapters.
