They could've just had him slowly being op with his equipment, maybe high C tier or low B tier. That way he can still improve, not just in equipment but in his stats.

What I would've written is since he was relegated as pack mule, he didn't get experience for his skill. His skill is only good for finding good things. And after gaining exp from fighting in an E rank dungeon, he gains exp that boosts his skill. Now his skill gets an upgrade; everything he buys gets added buffs.

This way he gets stronger, his former teammates don't suddenly become weak, and he quickly becomes stronger than them since they have plateau'd.

Yeah what you suggested woulda been a lot better…

Also what it seems that this world is heavily reliant on gear AND levels so a thing that could have happend to the old team is that they ARE strong level wise but over time they get weaker as they can’t find replacements for their equipment (remember his ability was suppose to be to find what he wants for cheap key word find).

So like you suggested we see Mc get stronger over time and catch up to them while they plateaued due to equipment (ie hard to find or too expensive) and maybe they are still A rank because they are making up for the equipment with sheer levels at this point.
