You forgot to add that most people claiming to be spirit mages in the guild end up being incapable of demonstrating any power or perform any duty, and because of that some people have gotten hurt or scammed... repeatedly, for good while on that guild.
Well, I wasn't motivated to give a long explanation. Seemingly all proper spirit users come from a family line or had a renown master, because it is usually impossible to be a self-taught spirit mage.

Man, this manga is so cute, it's addictive. I usually read the latest releases but also releases of previous chapter, and then I read everything again.

The whole spirit mage system is kinda broken. Nobody, even spirit mages, don't know how to properly work with spirits. Since MC is a special case who can see and hear spirits, he figured out that you can just tell them what you want them to do.
Normal spirit mages use complicated chantings. Problem is that even low level spirits like Bell have a hard time understanding the mages intention with chant. Also the majority mages usually contract floating spirits which have an even harder time understanding the chant.
The consequences of this is that they often fail in using spirit magic thus making them very unreliable.
If the manga doesn't skip the part it, you will understand it after Mel makes the contract in the next 2 or 3 chapters.
Iirc the manga mentioned this as well, that complicated chants are counterproductive.

This series have also drilled down the valid reasons spirit mages are looked down upon, but my main issue with the writing (yes, the writing itself, not the adventurer's guild) is because Yuuta has done several very public ass whoopings at the guild. This discrimination joke was funny the first few times, but now it's just annoying. I wish they'd tone it down until the author's ready to tackle the topic seriously.
