Just writing to express my thanks for your excellent translations.

I've binged all the volumes you've translated thus far over the past few days and it has been utterly delightful being able to journey with Oishinbo's characters chronologically. My previous exposure to Oishinbo was through the official translations that gathered chapters thematically. You got to see familiar characters, learn about food and had excellent translation notes, but nothing beats what you've been doing here.
(likewise, while I'm aware they've released proper subs for the anime on youtube, nothing beats reading for me)

I've laughed aloud at some of your Gourmet notes and also deeply appreciate the research and care gone into them, providing a balanced understanding of the author's bias against more current research.

Once again, my profound thanks for your translation efforts, keep up the good work!

yes, it’s great to see pictures of the food (and the times that Oishinbo fans try and recreate the dishes, I love seeing that kind of fan content).

I thought they were going to win in this chapter by pointing out how cloyingly awful trying to actually eat your way through that meat-fat laden fancy box would be. you’d be begging for a bit of mochi after trying to go from foie gras to lobster to bear paw

Ah, yes, finally Kanegi's debut (or Kanegami, if you want to stick with his name in the official translation) in the story, arguably the most despicable and just an all-around piece of shit character in Oishinbo.

This man is just so evil that anytime he appears in the same chapters as Yuzan, the only proper reaction we have to do is to stand up with Yuzan, all because we know that even Yuzan still has some redeeming qualities within him (though he still can be a legit asshole at times with his personality).

I won't exactly list out all the shitty and petty things Kanegi does in the manga in this reply (coz that'd be spoilers), but in case anyone's curious, anytime Kanegi appears in the story, you can expect him to literally cause anyone (including Yamaoka choosing to side with his father) to join together just to shame and bring Kanegi down.

Sorry if my words are quite strong on my opinions about Kanegi (maybe a bias as someone who has read this manga for years idk), it's just that those words are probably the only words that befit Kanegi as the manga's shittiest character around.

Either way, my sincerest thanks for this manga's translation as always, and I'm looking forward to the next chapters!

It's interesting that you point this out. Despite their similarities, Kanegi (金木) is actually a different, distinct character from Kanegami (金上). I believe Kanegi is an early version of the character that Kariya eventually recycled to become Kanegami in the future, like how Sawako (Vol5) would be recycled into [future character] and Tayama (Vol19) would be recycled and split into [future character] and [future character].

Spoiler: The Future Characters

Kanegami is absolutely scum, so your words are well warranted. His background though is different from what we learned of Kanegi in this chapter, so I'm fairly confident they're different characters. I'm actually excited to get to Kanegami's chapters, but they're still so far away.

The love rivals though are much closer. Sawako gets recycled into Niki Mariko, Kurita's rival, while Tayama gets recycled first into Kinjo Isamu, the rugged, sporty photographer, then an additional love rival in President Dan, the rich, genius gentleman who actually DOES give Kurita second thoughts.
I'll reach their chapters soon, and I'm really excited to show off their stories. The drama can feel tired sometimes, but it's so fun translating for them.
