Definitely one of those "he knew he meant it one way", potentially because of his lack of experience (and possibly confidence) but everyone else heard it differently, yeah.

This chapter's very much a "words mean things and how you say it doesn't mean others hear the same" sort of experience.
And a good lesson to learn over something relatively low-stakes in the grand scheme of things, because communication is important in any relationship - and even when you don't get your intent across, being able to follow up and actually talk things through a second/third/whatever-needed time is just as essential to healthy growth between people.
He's young and this is his first go-around in dating and he's got stuff to figure out, so hopefully Toyoda doesn't hold it over him in an outsized fashion and allows him to actually make the effort to do better. I don't see why she wouldn't, of course, but it's a chance for growth and progression for them as people and as a pair.

Which, makes an interesting parallel to Anjou and Seto, who also have a mismatch in what they expect out of their relationship that requires some talking things through so that they can both be sure that no one's being mislead or even accidentally hurt by the actions of the other.
Toyoda being more...I guess "intense"? than Anjou (who's a bit more easy-going and laidback) adds a neat contrast in how people receive and deal with stuff that causes tension and interpersonal issues. So having these two also needing to "talk it out" and showing the differences in how they all go about it should be interesting.

She's a little heavy handed in her nitpicking but it's also a cute and somewhat realistic way to get insecure and jealous. We all know what he meant, but she's scared about the unconscious subtext when she was already feeling insecure of having to share him with other people. It's like saying "I want to travel here" instead "We should travel here". Word choice can be nitpicked to death.
