The author's inclusion of side characters, such as the Sage and the prince leaving the village at the same time and the Sage not resisting mind control, or the thief finding what he wants effortlessly, is completely plot armor. Actually, they weren't going to draw this section because it's a side character story (I hate things like that because it disrupts the flow of the story).
