Ah, is it common in Japanese murder mystery media for the assailant to be portrayed by a featureless character?
I've only ever seen it in Danganronpa.

That may be where it originated, or at least made it most notable, but it is fairly wide spread. Final Fantasy 14 uses it, mostly in the comedic Hildibrand stuff, and just a couple random manga that immediately come to mind have used it too.
