In the early 2000s and late 90s there was a stereotype of there always being that one dumb kid in the group that would eat things they weren't supposed to eat. Glue being the big one. We even have insults based around them like "Glue eater" because of that cultural moment.

You'll likely see it in or referenced by movies, books, games and TV shows from that time. It was everywhere.
Yeah, I know the trope but why glue? Is american glue tasty or something? Does it have corn syrup in it like everything else?

Kids eating glue is actually ancient because the oldest forms of paper glues were technically edible. For example a common cheap formulation was just water plus gluten from whatever the local staple grain was, and another common technique was literally just the stickiest available tree sap such as maple or sweetgum. As these are paper glues, students would encounter them in early schooling, at the stage when they are still putting weird shit in their mouths to experiment.

Le funny meme substance corn syrup wasn't invented until the 1800s.
