So either the cashier gets measley a penny or if this takes place in the US after pennies are no long printed/accepted and change is rounded off to the nearest 0 or 5, gets nothing.

Yes, in a century or so.
a single penny isn't actually worth one penny
Because the value of the metals in the coin is worth way more

You kidding me? Put it on eBay and exploit the fact that they aren't making them anymore. Some idiot will buy it for more than it's worth. It's a scheme that the Franklin Mint has exploited for years.

I assume the total includes sales tax... But, anyway, the silver half-dollar was discontinued a while after it was no longer all or mostly silver. Now the copper penny is discontinued a while after it is no longer all or mostly copper. Somewhere out there, CoinStar is making absolute bank.

Okay, googled it and saw some states do charge tax on food (assuming United States). I live in a state that doesn't, so I thought the notion was absurd.

Actually, for a while during the lockdowns, some states charged even more tax for food than other household items (they called it a restaurant or meal tax, something like that). I live in one of those states. For a myriad of reasons, I will soon not be living in one of those states.
