I was going to write a note about the O- prefix, but after some research, it seems that during my time studying Japanese, I have made a weird grammar connection that doesn't exist at all lol.

If you could just buy a good fortune slip, it seems to me you might as well just skip drawing one altogether. The core of the idea must be that you can't predict what you will get. Only then getting good fortune would feel meaningful. If you look at the scale form the translator's page, it's favouring fortune over misfortune greatly, as it is. So, it's definitely not meant for boosting good luck charm sales. Especially these days in old developed societies religion isn't exactly enjoying its heydays, so they need to be careful.

Generally, it's added to things or actions that are treated with respect, politeness or, more literally, honor. I'd like to believe that back in the day, they just added it because those words carry a great deal of significance in the culture. Then it just stuck around in modern Japanese as fixed phrases.

Tea is used in formal gatherings and ceremonies, baths are naturally part of one's day to day life and is also involved in spiritual/ritualistic practices, and money is always a precious thing to have.

Have you seen anime cold/flu? They’re lethal!

People say that a lot, but I feel like it's the exact opposite. Anime/manga colds always seem to be 100% recovered from within 1 to 2 days. Never in my life have I come down with a cold and then felt perfectly fine and energetic two days later. Usually the cold is still ramping up at that point, actually! And certainly I would still be worried about being contagious. But people in anime never are. They take exactly one day off of school or work, and that's it, no further consequences.

It actually does bug me, especially in a post-COVID world, that manga and anime still promote absolutely wrong beliefs about how contagious illnesses spread. Characters get colds based on being out in the rain, and during the one day they stay home in bed, another character will stick close to them all day with no consequences. Really makes me worried about how seriously people in Japan take that stuff. Of course, it could be that it's just seen as a manga trope, but then wouldn't more people be annoyed by the trope? 🤷
