Wait, are Japanese detectives not trained to know how to use basic firearms?

I know they are strict with them there, but are even detectives prohibited from owning guns?

Pretty much every private citizen is banned from owning a real gun there unless they're part of the police force. So if you run a private investigation agency, you're not really allowed to have one I think

Is retrocognition another name for psychometry? I wonder if there's any difference between them.

maybe because MC has never seen that kind of gun (a kind of gun from the war era in the past), MC was confused about how to use it

Reading the title, I thought it would be about a detective from the modern world using modern investigative methods and forensic science to solve crimes in a medieval setting, but he actually solves crime using magic skill?

Furthermore, the girl he possesses already has the same ability and is even often consulted by the authorities for investigations? It feels like this might have been a more interesting story if it were just about Julia instead of some guy possessing her.

I'm already a fan of TS reincarnation stories, but the detective angle makes this pretty unique as far as stories like this go, and there also seems to be an intentionally-added tension about the MC not knowing if this is really a full reincarnation (meaning Nogami and Julia are the same person who just awoke to their past memories) or if Julia somehow disappeared and Nogami became her.

I just looked up some basic definitions for both.

Retrocognition: the alleged psychic ability to perceive past events, objects, or information that could not be known by normal means.

Psychometry: a parapsychological practice where individuals claim to read an object's history, or its owner's, by touching it to receive mental impressions.

It looks like psychometry is a subset of retrocognition, so technically both would be correct, but maybe psychometry is more so since the power shown here is specifically triggered by touching objects.

Yeah, that's just Denmark. Author or Artist really could not be bothered to create a fantasy map this time. (its still better than the ovals with some squiggly lines they usually use)

With the power of deduction and armed with the knowledge of modern criminology, this noble lady will not leave any mystery unsolved!
Ah, no, wait, she's got the magical skill of "just literally solve the crime". Nevermind

So the difference only lies in the trigger requirement? That's a very specific subset.

"All supernatural and preternatural agencies are ruled out as a matter of course."

Come on, author. It's even the one that I remember the exact wording of. The gender swap shenanigans in this manga better be good, because the mysteries sure aren't going to be if the MC just uses magic to immediately figure out the culprit every time!

Yes and no. Retrocognition is just "Seeing into the past". Psychometry is a subset of Retrocognition that requires touching an object

That gun looks like a Luger p08, a gun developed around 1898. This world is around the technological level of the very first decade of the twentieth century, with elements of previous decades (the horse drawn carriage seems to be of an earlier time) mixed in.
