Given a choice between her family and the bear...
she chose the bear.

Page 13 the bear looks like a Disney drawing from back before they completely gave up pretending to not be actively evil.

This is such a Japanese chapter...
oh!she loved me but expressed it in absolutely no discernable way! Now I who refused to communicate this uncertainty she left me with love her too!
As someone with genuinely hate filled and neglectful parents I detest this trope. More so since I became a father. I couldn't imagine avoiding my daughter or just never telling her shes loved.

Japan has a stoic culture, thats fine, but completely ignoring and neglecting your kids will lead to a lifetime of problems. And there is no instant forgiveness just because you cared you just never bothered to show it.

It's a reflexive defense mechanism to minimize trauma from parental neglect. Also maybe the daughter would be more social if her only non-bed ridden family member didn't leave her in complete isolation?

All that spiel about coexistence yet she can't coexist with her own fucking kid. Yeah sure, I'm too scared to talk to my own daughter, instead I will leave her alone with my half-dead husband and go hang out with, erm, a fucking bear.

Incredibly disappointing chapter in what is otherwise an amazing series. Somehow I feel like this is related to the author's personal life because of the nonsensical premise and resolution. Ah well, I'll just pretend this chapter never existed.
A more self-aware author might have acknowledged the irony of someone who cares so much about understanding other people being so ignorant of those close to them.

That actually reminds me of Alice Walker's relationship with her daughter. A vocal feminist passionate about sisterhood and mentoring young women who was either indifferent or hostile to her own daughter.

to echo the sentiments of everyone else, this chapter aint it.

it works well in series dealing with different forms of lose, but i really hate a neglectful parent who, only upon their death, reveal they really did love their child. feels like such cruel manipulation right at the end

Oh yeah, this is bad. If the roles are reversed where the father is the distant one with a dying mother, we'd get a more vengeful reaction. This? This is just way too forced.

In my opinion, this would be written better if this was over a few chapters, add some tid bits that maybe the mother had tried somewhere, at least some hints here and there that she actually tried to connect but no instead we only get the child's POV and honestly? Even from the child's POV it felt forced that she was like "oh. I was loved(?)" after reading a book from a dead person.

At the end, I said "dead person" instead of "dead mother" because it was written in the chapter itself that the daughter said their relationship is one of indifference, not even mother and daughter. Like would you start feeling loved if a stranger wrote it in a book and left it on their grave? It just has too many holes that it feels extremely unrealistic both the scenario and the end reaction and that's why I think everyone disliked this chapter.

Seriously the only thing that I am going to take is to forgive me my overly cold but shy and caring deadbeat parent

Haven't seen this bullshit since Miranda Sings Apology Video.
