Chapter 78

Really like this chapter, excellent way to segue back to the signature flow of the series after the world-building of this Ghost Train arc.

Plus, seeing these Yayoi moments like when she gets petty or behaves like her age are surprisingly soothing, almost relieving to see she's not lost her humanity. Yayoi embarked on her crusade in part because nobody believed her, so it must mean a lot for an adult like Shami to not only believe her, but trust her actions.

Recovery

Fascinating, so recovery arts in this series, even Shiniku have a time limit for what counts as the "default" state of the recipient to heal back to. So as strong an energy converter as Ai is, she can't handle excessive energy flows or else her nerves will get permanently screwed, hence forced termination via severing.

So what does this mean for Kamiyo Sogen? His grandson's body he's occupying is similarly untrained and delicate, but them Replaced will no doubt make use of it in some unknown capacity. Questions questions…

I'm really curious about how this time limit is gauged for every type of injury.

Interrogation

I'm so glad we get to see the interrogation live instead of as a flashback after the deed, and Yayoi got to participate in it.

We already heard from the previous Supervisors meeting that the Replaced are doing something around the Imperial Palace, and now we know it's to enact a Night Parade of Hundred Demons-type scenario to lure hoards of evil spirits to Tokyo.

I'm dubious about Risu-tan's explanation though, gaps in knowledge and all that. Specifically, that the goal is a massacre of humans for the Replaced's to feast on. Such an end goal feels too flashy for the sneaky Replaced, since it'd expose themselves and is counterproductive for infiltrators like Oswald.

I've seen discourse in the Chinese fandom that such a hypothetical feast would be more to benefit either Kuubou or Main-Body Tai Sui, and I think I'm inclined to side with that. Heck, Yayoi's namesake of "Kuubou" was based on the Night Parade legends, so that could seriously be the case.

10 or so main executives of the Replaced plus their subordinates huh? A surprisingly definitive head count. I think at best we'll kill off 1 or 2 of their groups during this upcoming Night Parade (Dorothy perhaps?), then a few more during the National Tour, then the remainder at the endgame.

Unorthodox

Our cool beauty has no talent! /s

I knew we were never deviating from our evil spirit Pokémon schtick, but Tai Sui now sapping all of Yayoi's spare MP is such a cool rationale for why she has to stick with it for the rest of the story. It's like a reverse telling of those stories in which the protagonist is "powerless" per the superpower system of the tale and so has to play smart or interact with it differently to thrive, except Yayoi went straight for the "interact differently" option from the get-go.

Also, after years of me analysing that Yayoi's homebrew amateur ghost-taming methods are unconventional to the more traditional practices that likely exist for spiritualists in this universe, there's something nifty and vindicating to see such musings be "officially" confirmed in-story.

Feels good to see that Mamoru indeed makes an excellent mentor to Yayoi per speculation. As someone with a similar skillset, he can actively guide, nurture and contribute to her unique fighting style while knowing exactly where her fences should be.

Feeling assured that the Supervisors will indeed positively function as Kimetsu's Pillars/Hashira-like allies in the narrative, and Shami and Mamoru are off to a good start.

Your Ghosts will now listen to your commands

I love we're officially getting back to our regular schedule after such a breaking development. Can't wait to see Keitaro and Eiko again, and I wonder if they'll be allowed to witness let alone participate in her final attempt?

And what a nice reward to aim for: after handicapping herself, it's time for our Trainer to get her Gym Badge so her Pokemon will listen to her! (It's easy to forget but that's the function of the Badges in the mainline series). But Tai Sui is on the VGC Ban List!

Three spirits based on a singular theme? This is totally a Legendary Trio encounter (ie the Birds, the Beasts, the Regi's, etc.)

Also, this turn-spirits-into-Shikigami power, is it automatic or manual? After all, since the nicer ones like Sergeant and Maiden are already cooperating, I would prefer this to be optional. And if that's the case, wouldn't it be cool if it works like a less silly-looking Terastallization mechanic from Gen 9?

The Timeframe

1 month for the challenge huh? This is ironically a longer timeframe than most of the story thus far. To put this into perspective:

  • May 1st to 7th - Chapters 9 to 34, from meeting Ai to departing for Kyoto (3 Graduates + 3 Haunts + 3 other incidents)
  • May 8th to 12th - Chapters 35 to 66, Kyoto Arc (5 Haunts + 1 big battle)
  • May 13th to 19th - Chapters 67 to 78, arrive back in Tokyo + Yayoi flashback + Supervisors' Meeting + Ghost Train + Mamoru's "training"
70 chapters and still less than a month. And now we're supposed to get 1 whole month to fit in 4 Graduates + 5 Haunts + 1 big battle? Easy mode?

While at first it sounds like a cinch, keep in mind the trio accomplished so much between May 1st to 7th because it was the Golden Week holidays. But this next month, Keitaro and Eiko have to keep back up with university and school is likely to resume for Yayoi, so they'll have to work at a slower pace. (And then there's Ai's schooling too)

Even so, if they pace themselves in 3-day cooldowns in-between, maybe they'll just need 2 to 3 weeks for the main gathering, leaving still enough room for a couple of other diversions/interferences in-between before Yayoi takes on the challenge on the last day?

This estimate, plus if the reduced page-count-per-month nowadays becomes the new standard, will put us at 3 years of serialisation time,. And this is still before accounting for whether the Replaced's Night Parade will happen during or after the timeframe...
