That thing Ei has isn't just some lucky pervert trope, it's a straight up curse of misfortune. Especially since it's a route of a stamp rally, it's likely other groups, at least the teachers had already crossed just fine. That bridge almost killed him. Sure apparently it's not deep enough to kill but if you fell on the wrong spot, he would've literally die.

It makes sense That Manaka would chase after Kimura despite what he said. As long as he gives her the push, she can keep moving forward and... without Kimura she doesn't know how she'd ever progress.(Ch 5, pg.21) That's why she ran for him despite what he said, Because he's seen her at her weakest and if he was truly lost (despite the panels kinda making it hard to gauge whether time passed enough for concern) She wanted to be there to help him at essentially the weakest she's even seen her wingman be.
