It makes sense that it is a perception filter as well as a memory alterer as that’s how the rest of the town’s perception is altered: something that changes people’s recollection and perception of events whilst also altering the things they see to match that reality.

If i had to guess that takes awhile of eating the parasites to mutate the main host.
This is the first one we are seeing her eat (presumably) and one of the few active so its most likely going to spread from here.

Considering the author's others works I'm not holding my breath. It's very grim to be trapped in a false world of pseudo-happiness and getting stalked by an imperceptible predator. I only hope if/when she eats the parasite her ability to inoculate the senses means the victim won't know what's happening to them.
