The FMC being a widow quite young, well we don't actually know their ages, got me back interested. Though I reckon that there was no husband, whether because she was lying or because he died before marriage is unknown.

eh, as someone who is in a similar situation to him, I don't think talent gets you everything... you have to know people well, get yourself motivated, etc. which is just really difficult for someone like him (and me, I guess 😞)

Even if the wound is still fresh... Some people learn that being blunt or dismissive is the fastest possible path through a conversation that's too painful to have again. You know how the talk is going to go because you've had it countless times already anyway; nothing changes and in the end they look at you with pity or sympathy and tell you how sad it is. Now you also have something to feel guilty about, too, because the tragedy you want to escape has brought down the mood and your friend.

You can try to not tell them, but avoidance drags it all out. So you learn to say "Yeah, it happened," in a tone of voice that says you're done thinking about it and you wish they would be, too.
