I mean, yeah, my first instinct is that it's like, if you're watering houseplants & give every single one a single ladle-full of water, even if some are drier than others & clearly need more, then you're being too inflexible for the situation or whatever... but I assume the gist of the discussion is them being very literal about the specific words/terms used in the idiom & Uncle is too much of a dummy to grab onto this line of thinking, considering he was an unpopular, videogame-obsessed, shutin teenager with zero social skills or life experience before meeting truck-kun (or whatever his circumstances were, I honestly don't remember at this point lol). Probably only ever heard the expression once from his grandparents as a child & never gave it any thought whatsoever until this point
