It seems the beans were reacting different to the coagulating agent than soybeans, part of the reason he was having trouble. The fox just gave him the hint

Nobu's guardian deity finally showed up! Just like the fox god in Gen, they basically only show up when they actually want something or to give a nudge to those within the store

Gen's fox is tiny, but this one looks more adult. I wonder if this is a more senior spirit, or they just Look Like That For No Reason.

Edit: I read in the Wiki that Gen's fox had to go around other shrines to ask to be able to connect Gen to Oiria while Nobu's one apparently just did it herself, so I guess the tiny fox is from a smaller shrine and so maybe has weaker powers?

Yeah, as soon as it mentioned it being used as thickening for soups it was a pretty good hint it'd work. Even aside from the whole "This is basically the last one I have to try cause it's such a long shot" thing.

I remember reading somewhere that Japanese Temples stop offering meat and other stuff to the foxes as it could be detrimental to their health. Tofu or what's usually offered, usuage was found as an alternative.
