Judging by the bear figurine he is grasping at on the cover, I think he does.

maybe? the figurine is just symbolic at this point, no? he used to carve them for others, and now he gets to make his own. on its own, it would still be useful as a memento or totem, it doesn't necessarily have to be magic too. it would lend more weight to the tradition that everyone needs to carve their own, but since the village elders were never actually that mad, they can't be overtly magic normally or they would have made his recipients toss the carving he made them

Ahh, right, that one was for the totem. I confused it with the ones used as accessories (page 7 of chapter 1). I figured that the figurines each villager wears indicate who they hunted during the ritual, so the protagonist would have a bear figurine now. His brother completed the ritual when he killed the orca that attacked their boat, and I guess their father somehow managed to get a whole whale as his first kill? I thought that this was the reason the brother was one of the best hunters, but after a reread I see that his proficiency wasn't explicitly tied to his first kill.
Yeah, sorry, I think I made a wrong assumption there.
