it's not sympathy. We're just acknowledging that someone is bad while not thinking that any random punishment is appropriate. What does
being launched into space to starve even have to do with any of this? It's a common problem with zama where their comeuppance ends up being disconnected from what happened or misses the actual point of what they did wrong. The fact that she was making these decisions because
he was secretly drugging her also makes this annoyingly muddy.
Zama missing the point all the time. Take your usual kicked out of the hero party setup as an example. Usually, his hero friend and/or the mc's girlfriend kicks him out thinking they could replace him with someone more valuable only to find themselves destitute and the mc rich with a harem. If you look at that, it just means they failed to see how profitable he was and made a bad trade. The actual problem is that they thought of their friend/lover as a commodity they could trade, though, and so, it doesn't quite hit.
I think an example of a zama that hits the mark is The Big but Small Nanase-san (yes, it's named so because the female lead is short with big tits and ass). Long story short,
fl's boyfriend starts messing with another girl who teaches him how to setup all his interactions and msgs with his girlfriend so that, if he's caught, he can just tell everyone that she's just a jealous stalker and they were never together and she'll have no proof otherwise. FL leaves for MC and he, actually saying that he's a harem protag, gets mad at her 'cheating' chases after her only to find the girl he was cheating with walking with another guy. He confronts her and she uses everything she taught him to convince everyone he's a delusional stalker. You see, she does this because she once just decided to seduce her little sister's boyfriend and when she was caught, she panicked and said he was stalking her instead. She enjoyed the sight of her parents making her little sister apologize to her in tears even though she's intentionally stole her boyfriend and now does this shit regularly. She seduces someone's boyfriend, accuses them of being a stalker and laughs inside while girls cry and apologize to her. Until she gets and actual stalker and she can't figure out who since she messed with and falsely accused so many guys. So now her only options are to confess everything she did to everyone and her family to get help or live every day in fear and the now real stalker coming for her.
Another good example is what's going on now with the hero in I Partied with the Hero's Mother. The fact that he now
has a daughter and will soon have a wife and he has to figure out how to live on his own while taking care of a family, when neither learn how to take care of themselves either, all while thinking about all the stuff his stepdad, the mc, did for him is much more on point than simply "random bad stuff happens to him because he's bad".
