But uh, here we are.

I'm with Rico, though. It's not been a waste. Because even if Chihaya really can never beat Mio in racing, or grades, or the social game, or "life in general"--she's been the one who has consistently pushed Chihaya to become More than she was the day before. Hells, even when Chihaya fell into stasis for nearly a decade, the one who pulled her out and back under the sky?

Mio.

Yes, Ayase was there. And Rico was there. But it was the promise of facing one person once more that had Chihaya running out the door with the encouragement of her grandma. It was one person who saw Chihaya striving and straining and pushing herself past all limits in an attempt to finally come out on top.
And it hurts, so badly, knowing that the one person around whom you've framed the whole of your existence remains this untouchable presence ever just out of reach, whose back you're forever seeing, and never her face...
But. Mio is the one for whom Chihaya runs.

And even if she can't win...Chihaya has found friends, and meaning, in that chase. Sometimes you need something to run toward in order to live your life. And sometimes you'll never actually catch it, but it's like her sensei said--it simply means "you have infinite room for growth". That can be enough, if you frame it correctly, to make it all worth it.

Dreams are kinda just that. Something that you have when you're asleep, when your eyes are closed and you're not looking at the world and the people around you. Time doesn't matter there, and the details remain fuzzy and eventually are lost to the cosmos.
So when Chihaya opens her eyes and sees the sky again, and she has Ayase and Rico by her side, I do think that it's been worth it. That there's been meaning.

And I suspect Mio wouldn't disagree.

As soon as she started the whole.monologue starting with her dreams, it got me choked up and everything after just made it hit harder. Blindsided but welcome

Maybe Chihaya should start running for cola instead of chasing after Mio. That might do it, I think.

Being serious, though: the Promised 100 Meter Run highlighted the flaw in Chihaya's character that led to her loss. Thus far, she has viewed success as a binary. She always either is fast enough to receive external validation in the form of awards, praise, and first-place rankings, or she has wasted her life. She can either beat Mio, or be chasing after Mio. What about after, though? All of her motivation stems from beating Mio instead of running as fast as she can.

Mio runs looking ahead, while Chihaya was looking at Mio almost the entire race: as she was settling into the starting position, as she started recovering, and as she nearly caught up to Mio. Her immense drive to chase is what makes her perform better in the second half. But, she forgets what her coach said in Chapter 12: that she has infinite room for growth, and can overtake Mio and go beyond.

I wonder if this race's outcome will prompt her to finally run for and against herself.

I think that's why she ultimately lost. She started losing her focus when she looks over to Mio and remembers how she has never beat her before. The monologue got me choked up multiple times while doing the chapter.

Just want to add this small piece... The manga's opening line is "A dream I see many times over" "A scene that doesn't exist". Chihaya sees her race with Mio in her dreams often, but she never win in her dreams. It's just a scene that doesn't exist for her.
