It's funny because you can't say Arir can't write a compelling story with compelling characters because we wouldn't all be here if she hadn't nor would we have been disappointed in where the story went.

I mean its possible for stuff to garner discussion without being compelling or well thought out. In fact, I'd say in this day and age it's pretty easy if you have good art and you know what buttons to push, word will get around. Illicit love garnered more discussion that almost any other running toon at the time, did that have a compelling story and character through its runtime?

It's always hilarious to read those "I bought ALL the volumes up to this point, but no more, you're EVUL!" comments because they're full of shit.

Hell, before this new wave of hate, most of the replies she was getting came from a clearly mentally ill Colombian named "Alex" or something, who was spamming from like four different accounts, all repeating the same shit.

Had she said nothing, people would've moved on to the next drama in like a few days and forgotten entirely about her. And this isn't just on Katsura Airi, because Japanese artists in general just don't know how to handle online drama at all.

I think it's normal for people to be upset, they've spent time reading and found the story's development to be very unsatisfying. Airi uses social media to promote her work, but the flip side of that is running into situations like this. Instead of arguing about whether people paid for it or not and how much right they have to complain, she should realize that she’s missed a great opportunity to sell her work outside of Japan and make more money. Now I seriously doubt that a foreign publisher will take the risk of buying the rights to translate and publish it.
