Not saying this as a defence of the manga since I 100% agree that he's more a plot device than a character, but I can buy that he remains naïve. Most of the people he's run into have been decent-ish. It's the other manga about a dude that can cure zombies with his cock that's had a bunch of villains.

I confess I'd need to reread this to refresh my memories. I thought they had encountered some villains before this cult, but if they haven't, yours is a strong point. Although that being said, it's not like they would have needed to fight humans before, per se, it's the general reality that things will only get worse as time goes on, most likely, and they can't trust in lucky breaks or pretty much anyone but themselves. That's just the reality of a zombie apocalypse. So, he would need to grow tougher the same as a person stranded on a deserted island would, even if there were zero cannibals present!
