I think it's pretty interesting in that the elixir of mother earth did have the intended effect, but the intended effect did not result in the product he's looking for. Normally in these stories they'd just make it so the elixir would directly create the product the story requires.

The story is mostly "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle", but there's a few points where deeper spots show up like this. It's kind of refreshing.

I can't believe you forgot to mention the horse goddess waifu, but I see what you mean. It was a relatively laid-back isekai, so some romance wouldn't hurt. Despite that though, I actually enjoyed it a fair bit. However, this series has much more action, and atleast for me action and romance just doesn't mesh well. So I prefer it this way.
