But the way this was introduced was... Poorly executed, to put it politely.

I want to point out that Kurose has always been timid and pushed around by others. He dreads failure, too. He probably has been told something similar in the past, then things fell out poorly, and was told the black text we saw. This caused his fear to take over and make him run away. After all, this fear isn't strictly rational, either, but that's human and realistic.
