And people saying “they should just talk” as if these character flaws and insecurities weren’t established in the first chapters just makes me wonder what world they’re living in where flawed people make purely rational decisions.
Calling it abusive isn’t really accurate since so much of it is in Mitsuki’s head, but Aya is definitely seeing her retreating to these new friends and is very hurt by it. Mitsuki’s response has been to retreat further and continue the cycle.

It might be realistic to flawed human behavior but inertia and frustration is just not entertaining on a months long loop.

The head canon is saying she’s lashing out and being abusive.

Where?

Sh’e not “sad about her band breaking up” she lacks confidence entirely and she thinks she’s just lost the connection that brought her and Aya together in the first place. She’s scared she’s got nothing to offer Aya so she’s using the physical relationship they’ve built like a crutch and trying to avoid the root problem.

And people saying “they should just talk” as if these character flaws and insecurities weren’t established in the first chapters just makes me wonder what world they’re living in where flawed people make purely rational decisions.
Chapter 6 establishes Mitsuki thinks she’s boring and has nothing to offer Aya so why would she even call her. Nevermind that Aya doesn’t even know she not a guy.

Joe has her at a concert and says “what are you talking about, you have this”. The rock scene. That’s it. That’s not how Joe meant it but note that he doesn’t say anything about Mitsuki’s value, just that Mitsuki has rock.

We haven’t learned yet that Joe has the relationship skills of a walnut. So it seems like it’s encouragement.

Fast forward to after the timeskip and we watch Mitsuki fumble and then completely lose the one thing she believes makes her worthy of Aya. Poor self confidence is a bitch and if you think your value only exists in one thing it’s not going to be a simple matter of going “oh that made me sad”. Mitsuki panics, she tries to avoid it, she clings to things like their physical relationship, all the while believing she’s got nothing to offer anyone.

I don’t feel like this is super hard to follow. Like it may not be the most satisfying drama but it happens in real life and it was very clearly set up from the beginning.

I mean, that’s fine, that’s why I suggest a lot of people wait for the volumes. Page wise this hasn’t been any longer than a monthly manga’s arcs it just feels longer because of the four page format.

Emotional abuse isn't just 'yelling at someone'. Aki went missing because Mitsuki's insecurities made her say something that hurt him. Mitsuki quit the band because Aki happened to turn up to a show and Mitsuki decided for herself what Aki was thinking. In the wake of that Aki is shown as being hurt because Mitsuki won't trust her. Or just, y'know, the whole of ch164-166. Again, I'm not upset so much as let down that this keeps happening, and I'd be willing to bet the author doesn't mean it that way. But this is where we are, without any kind of indication to the contrary.

And people saying “they should just talk” as if these character flaws and insecurities weren’t established in the first chapters just makes me wonder what world they’re living in where flawed people make purely rational decisions.

I don't think that's a useful comparison, at least in context. They're old enough to drink, which means those initial character flaws and insecurities were about three years of relationship ago and at least one or two years of living together. If you can't build enough trust over three years to at least avoid some of these communication issues, then that really just indicates it's a bad matchup.

That's a bold move Mitsuki. I wonder if the anime will get to these parts and we'll get to hear the music leading up to this. Can't wait to see her reaction now; I'm not expecting it to be straightforward, though I'm expecting a definite "yes." Maybe not immediately. The brother for a show. His reaction will be something to watch for, depending on how Aya responds.

Also, they're new friends who have crushes on them both witnessed that. I wonder how they'll react. They both already knew they're feelings were one-sided anyway and both of them seemed intent on doing anything (Shu doesn't seem like she fully understands what she feels yet, for example). Still, I wonder how they'll respond.

before any marriage plans.. they should have a deep conversation, because these emotions are rather temporary and the excitement wont last long. if they really want it to work out in the long play then they must talk it out like adults

While yes technically that’s a bad matchup I’m not sure you realise how common it is to never have a perfectly good matchup and to not realise problems until way way later.

My ex wife and I were in our late 20’s before we understood she had anxiety. Early 30s before we learned I had double depression. Divorced and late 30s before we both were diagnosed with ADHD. Like, yes technically even though we lasted for 16 years and tried to do everything we could for each other we were a bad match. But we had no way of knowing that and no idea what was wrong for years. That’s not exactly rare. We’re great friends now and know how to help each other but no, drinking age and a short cohabitation did not magically solve our issues.

Maybe we’ll get to see them get to the root of their problems now. Maybe they’ll break up and we’ll get blue yuri while they work on themselves separately (a kanjis do we Relationship). Maybe author’s tired of catching flack for a realistic relationship problem and this will end it. We don’t know.

All I know so far is it’s relatable, it’s realistic, and a lot of people would benefit from just waiting for the volumes before reading.

I mean, they're getting a Cloverworks anime out of this next year and they're 180 chapters in. I somehow doubt that a few people on Mangadex are going to be sending the author running for the hills.

I think my ultimate problem is that I'm not convinced they're deliberately writing this realistic relationship problem so much as they have their eye on the drama without considering how it makes their characters look over time. Which is kind of a problem of the format, and long chapters would probably feel more palatable and make those intentions easier to figure out. But '180 chapters in' is a hell of a time to try to switch your format up.

Fair. That's why I tend to suggest some people are better off waiting for the volumes though. Because it's not really 180 chapters, we're only in volume 5 going on volume 6. When you think about it or read it that way we're in volume 5 probably around chapter 30 watching the fallout of a problem that was set up in volume 2 with the consequence arc making up this volume. That's not out of the ordinary.

But you're right, the short format makes it feels like stops, starts, and jumps and can hinder the reading for some.

Guys, I think I'm tripping... Because I just read Mitsuki proposing to Aya when they haven't even cleared up the problem. Damn... Did my med go bad or something 😵‍💫?

It's always a joy reading the comments to this manga.

"This is how it turned out when I said it out loud“. I think she wanted to say something else. Not something different, certainly in the same line as her proposal. But most likely not a proposal. We shall see where this is going but we‘re not getting a wedding. Yet. If I had to take a guess it was probably „please stay with me forever“. As to why she said it? I mean look at Aya‘s face watching Mitsuki finally playing the guitar again after so long. It's literally in the chapter title.
