well, it has been a few years since I last read the WN, but this is completely different from the story there, just like with Sao's birth.
I'm starting to think that the last arc may be a mix of novel + original content.
In the webnovel:

Spoiler: How Sao handles the Emperor

Soon after "saving" Princess Seeker from the curse and stuff, I can't remember how, but Sao teleports (or maybe it was a passage of time, can't remember). the Empire is having something like a parade, Sao snipes the emperor and he dies. That's it, the entire thing was 1 or 2 chapters, and he returns to everyone.

Spoiler: What happens after (Not the end of the story)

Sao returns, he does stuff to the girls, including the meeting with the Mangoblin (The goblin that evolved 1005 times, in case you guys forgot the Rokublin joke from the first chapters), and later on, everyone gets pregnant.

However, the Empire is showing disturbances despite the emperor being dead, so Sao goes there, by himself, to handle the issues.
This is the half-way point of the novel, the later half is this new "journey" in the Empire

Spoiler: How the Empire arc starts

Because all girls were pregnant, there were none that could accompany him, and can't remember the details, he ends up joining another girl with the "Valkyrie" Job. She believes she will find the next lord, and she stays with Sao.

Sao thus starts going from side to side, freeing slaves, defeating princes and princesses. He finds out that his dad is none other than the Emperor he killed.

In the end, we find out that the Emperor did die, but his soul remained, because of his Class, and he took the body of one of his sons, thus, he was trying to find the most appropriate body for his soul to reside, until Sao confronts him and they face the final battle.

A reminder that this Arc is half the story, so it's quite long too, and we see nothing of the original heroines, only the new ones, starting from half-sister Valkyrie-chan.

halfway for sure, it's the exact midpoint, I'm just surprised that Calipa and Staff joined him, which means it could lead to original content.

And as I pointed out, there are 2 events: do the thing, return again later.
I'm starting to think the manga may decide to mix both into one, so this would be the midpoint, but Calipa and Staff join him in the journey.
