I'm assuming that when they were using the telescope, the older Shinju was alive, and the time when she tried to kill herself was the same day that the older Shinju died. Granted, that still doesn't mean that he's the father.

She was trying to kill herself by dousing herself with kerosene and setting herself on fire. That's why she's wet, holding a lighter, and smells bad. The lighter isn't hot enough to ignite the kerosene.

It looks like she's holding the lighter up to herself but not actually touching the flame. I'm not sure on the science, but maybe that would be enough to ignite gasoline (which has a flash point of -43 degrees Celsius), but not kerosene and that's why she was confused. I also think it's possible that she faked her suicide attempt in order to seduce Miyamae.

The flash point is not just the temperature at which the material ignites, but rather the point at which it gives off enough vapor to be ignited. In other words, the kerosene itself has to be at a temperature of >38°C in order to ignite, much higher than it would be at a typical ambient temperature, especially at night. So she would have needed to hold the lighter to herself for a fairly long time for it to heat up the kerosene enough for it to ignite.

(Fun fact, certain standards categorize fuels with such a high flash point as combustible, rather than flammable)
