I am not sure if normal is even the correct term for Mahiro. I wouldn't be surprised if Mahiro is also really talented, but the rest of the family is so insanely talented that Mahiro looks normal in comparison. To me it could very well be the case that Mahiro was a gifted student, but just being gifted isn't enough to get you anywhere, so I could see it if Mahiro worked incredibly hard in order to continue being seen as gifted and eventually ended up without friends and incredibly burned out. Especially if he compared himself to Mihari, who is on a whole other level of gifted.
