I wonder about that. Maybe he actually has a history of ruining budding relationships by being too aggressive about supporting them. With his looks and style, others would also interpret his actions as just hitting on the girl, not trying to help the couple. For all we know, in the past the girl (of the would be couple) could have seen it that way as well, and if the boy had been too shy to jump in to defend her, that could have been it for the whole couple. It would explain the rumours.
