Something does not add up here.

They must have done something other than simply being too powerful. If the gods erased and cursed you it must have been for a good enough reason other than jelaousy, right author-sama?

... Uh, have you not looked at how the ancient Greeks depicted their deities in their mythology? Or how the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar, who is infamous for capriciously transforming her lovers into beasts when she tires of them, threw such a massive hissy fit over the demigod Gilgamesh rejecting her advances, that she threatened the other gods with unleashing all the dead from the underworld upon the living so that they don't prevent her from sending a divine bull to destroy Uruk, the city which Gilgamesh ruled over? Or all the other myths where even nominally "good" deities are portrayed as whimsical, petulant jerks and tyrants? Cataclysmic annihilation out of petty jealousy is not that far-fetched of a depiction for a pantheon.

Y'know, I always figured the non-interference clause in most God's self introduction was mostly BS. I mean sure there will always be times when a delicate hand is needed to prevent collateral damage, but for the vast majority it just comes off like a skill issue, they're being miserly with their power, and or can't be bothered to take the time to do it themselves.

You're giving too much credit to another generic fantasy series, I was curious how bad it was and as usual the comments are more entertaining than the actual series. By experience, getting to know the actual reasoning behind this setup is simply disappointing.

Of course it was all so a generic character would appear at some point to pair him with this maid.

Nope.
Lots of stories from Japan have one guy getting hunted from a whoel country simply because he is too strong and done his job of killing someone equally strong.
Now you would wonder how can the nation that got helped by said hero and was unable to fight someone weaker than him even dare to do such a thing, but in 90% of the cases they use the hero love for humanity that holds him back to attack, or poison, seal or blakmail him with hostages.
In this case it was a whole city of hero-tier powerhouses living in peace, without a leash or that could be controlled by faith.
So the "gods" feared them, simply because they had the power to reach them.
3 devastating attacks to kill that kingdom, not one, they were scared..

What doesn't add up is another thing, the first attack looks like a massive blast, but the city is in good state, so or the heroes skeletons fixed the place or it was more of a gamma ray that killed everyone with radiation.
