It's probably just a wrap up for this arc.
Yeah but that’s… unless the translation was really really wrong…yomi should be off doing something that is both way more important in the plot and also would take place before the event being shown in the chapter.

I understand the concept of non-linear storytelling but that was a very big tease to nope out of if they did.

Granted that thing I’m referring to could also be in the chapter and the fan hasn’t mentioned/shown it yet.

Okay, so I know I’m usually very long-winded in text so I’m going to try and keep this simple. I’m not angry anymore. I’m disappointed. And I think I figured out the root causes.

1) this series is no longer character-driven. It’s instead now event-driven.

2) emphasizing the wrong things.

This Zane and hibana arc has been a capstone of both. This was a big life event for both of them… and this should feel more like a big change. Pregnancy, confessing your “true love” etc. these should be massive events that fundamentally change who these characters are. But instead we just sped by it and both Zane and Hibana just seem completely unfazed, factory reset to what they were before the events even happened. Even their child. We skipped by all of the pregnancy, all of her growing up, etc. this isn’t a character driven moment. This is a “quick, I need to have xyz happen, so I can get to ____” It’s all herky jerky and exists just to get us to the next scene.

Yet while we sped through at the speed of light, we spend countless pages on a villain monologue for a side character that we’ll likely never see again, and kicking grunts in the face until mechanical hands came in to restrain Zane and Hibana. That’s… 2 pages of story, stretched to 24.

Why did we focus so much on that and not the big earth-shattering revelations of the characters?

The original series had a much better balance of this.

Like, it’s the little things. In the original, if someone was raped, they acted differently afterwards. They might be anxious, look over their shoulder, not trust someone, hide in a group. Their body language changed. Their motivations changed. Etc. I mean one even had a villainous breakdown and hit her womb with a big rock.

But this series? They just get right back up and continue on the same. The rape exists, and then we go to the next scene.

The OG made a big deal about Yomi being raped. It was her self sacrifice. She blew herself up. She finally entrusted Mashiro to carry on the torch. But here she is, good as new. No damage from explosions.

Doleman is fine. He just survived a bullet to the head.

Gloria is fine. She only had her heart turned to stone. There was one line of dialogue that says it was a big medical bill.

even Mashiro. Whenever we eventually find her… we already know Win has a magical healing futa powers. So Mashiro could literally just be a severed head when we find her, and she’ll be fine. No torture is too much, we can magical reset her.

It ruins the stakes. Which is kind of weird to do in the series you want to be the shocking “no one is safe” series.

I know it’s way too late to restart the series, but rebellion should have started with Mashiro being raped. Then it should have been the series about her trying to escape. Then you have tension. What happens when the person who thought they were invincible loses? What happens when Wonder Woman loses her powers? What depths does she go to to get them back? How much does she endure?

Basically, those text stories on the authors website. Do those. That’s clearly what the author always wanted to do. So do them. You can build a whole new rebellion from inside the empire as a captive.

But instead we got completely side tracked/derailed by 3 years of a disjointed mess with flashbacks inside flashbacks, weird attempts at comedy, etc.

You know what, I had a weird thought. Instead of Yomi, how do we feel about having the evil girl with glasses, the one who was obsessed with Falka, be the one to save Zane and Hibana?

That would be a character development for her. She saw that she was wrong about Mashiro/had a change of heart in the end. She gets overlooked by the dominators/maybe they even like her for trying to capture Mashiro and broadcast her torture. So she’s in a position to sneak in/go undetected. And as far as I remember, she’s still unaccounted for.

I mean I get that the long play of this arc is “the people Mashiro saved in their time of need, in turn help Mashiro in her time of need.” What better way then to have someone who used to be evil and challenged her ideals on a fundamental level be the one to lead the charge? Then you have the unease of Zane, Hibana, etc not trusting her and she has to prove herself.

I find that better than yomi being here. Yomi already had her arc. She literally “passed the torch” to Mashiro and blew herself up. Yomi was the mentor character. The entire point of the mentor character is to get out of the way and/or die for the hero to grow. Like…obi wan doesn’t just show up to be the one to save Luke when he gets captured.

That doesn't make sense at all... Why would the Dominators accept Midori into their ranks?
1. She's a former Avant Rouge member, an anti-Dominator faction.
2. She's the leader of Louise Opinion after taking it from Gloria. Another anti-Dominator faction. And the men she caught were robbed of their will and treated like puppets. She definitely has a big bounty like Mashiro at this point.
3. Unlike Liao, she was not in a position to bargain w/ them when we last saw her. Her Jinki was beat up, they were outnumbered, and the Dominators can just take what she has. The technology she used was just modified Dominator tech, and they have that collar they used on Mashiro anyway if they don't want their slaves to resist.

I find that better than yomi being here. Yomi already had her arc. She literally “passed the torch” to Mashiro and blew herself up.
She only blew up her arm, not all of herself. She had a big wound on her torso, lost the arm, lived through that, got Rp'd, and got back up on her own strength after all of that was over. She was later kidnapped by Nect while still alive after the whole battle was over. Unconscious. That's the last time we saw her there.

She never passed the torch because she was never dead.

But I'm under the impression that you think she was shown to have died in the OG with the way you always describe Yomi, and her showing up in Rebellion has you surprised because you thought she was dead already and her presence is a retcon.

The only person completely engulfed in an explosion that's still around is Hibana when Folka detonated her bike mecha. So here's someone who survived something worse than what Yomi went through, and jumped into her Jinki to fight the Supreme Commander afterwards.

Yomi was the mentor character. The entire point of the mentor character is to get out of the way and/or die for the hero to grow. Like…obi wan doesn’t just show up to be the one to save Luke when he gets captured.
This is really oversimplifying it. I mean...

Why should every author follow the same pattern? Why should there be only one way to write a mentor type character? Why should everyone be another Obi Wan?

I'm not angry, btw. Even I think this wall of text looks like I'm hitting hard.

Okay, so ignoring the fact that Coleman survived a gunshot wound to the head, Gloria’s heart turning to stone is just “a medical bill” etc… man this series has so much bs people shouldn’t survive.

Yomi’s explosion was a pretty big plot point culmination for her. It was this big act of defiance, self sacrifice, and the moment where she let Mashiro carry on the burden of her mission. It was the “I finally trust you” thing

That kind of should be final, from a narrative standpoint.

As for why I think midori would work better: tension. Having someone who already betrayed Mashiro being on the team to save Mashiro will invite a lot more uncertainty amongst our heroes. And potentially more room for character growth. Midori can use this event to have a slow face-turn. But other people can not believe her and expect a set up. Etc. the clash of characters creates uncertainty and drama.

Edit: and don’t worry. You didn’t come across as angry. Or at least I didn’t think you did.
