Given that the story was jumping forward in time a lot, I think the author knew beforehand that this was going to get axed, but this is a mediocre ending, if being excruciatingly honest.

Still awesome chemistry between the two characters, could have wished to see more when they are a couple.

Usually they got to know for quite a while before axe, mostly through the sales numbers or readers' questionnaires. I guess the sales numbers for the first volume are not that high, so they're already told to finish it by the second volume's worth of chapters, hence the rush. If you follow some mangaka's socials, they sometimes tell people about these; yeah, it's unfortunate but understandable.
