The stuff with the casters and the summoned heroic spirit reporting back are nice additions. I don't remember if that stuff just happened offscreen in the game. I also don't remember Kotaro being so smug, but some of the characters have been kind of odd in an entertaining way.

Cool writes romance like he's being forced to do it. If he doesn't want to, he shouldn't waste everyone's time with it. I'm sure he can satisfy his "tiny man, giant woman" fetish without these terrible romantic subplots here and in Kobayashi.

This probably wasn't so much axed as that it ran about as long as it could since a manga promoting a LN generally doesn't run that long. It's a fun series. It's great to see a finished translation after all these years.
