For most characters I'd be criticizing this action. For Shen it seems more like progress towards human feeling.

I think the translator needs to work on pronouns. There are a few places where the dialogue is referring to the wrong people. You can see the difference looking at the bit where there's an overlap--like the older translation will be saying "you" and the newer one will be wrongly saying "I"...

The anime had a lot of good bits too. Some of the most memorable track this same story line with the Griffon, but also it had a lot of great comedy, the "New OAVs" in particular.
