My personal opinion is that it's a couple talking about their son, because Hiroki hasn't come out to them, and by having this talk among themselves, it gives dad more time to be accepting and not say the wrong thing when Hiroki is finally ready.

I think she just leans more towards a conservative and traditional asian mindset, not that I agree with her though. It was pretty normal growing up in an Asian country. Parents want the best for their kids even if it's preventing the kids from doing what they like supposedly for their own good.
