If you re-read the story and focus on him you coud see that everytime MC is upset or awkward, he come and change the subject of the topic. Usually with a prank or a joke. everytime she need it.

@trirose It's more clear in the novel. Valor doesn't really love MC, he just want to clear up his guilt. She didn't need to love him like she use too, she just need to stay with him. Like that he can be free of his guilt. And yes, he admit it's selfish.

In the novel it's precised that he admit he care about MC only to satisfied his own guilt. Not because he love her.
