Given that there is something obviously wrong with the prince, but they aren't detecting anything, you think they would re-evaluate their "nothing's wrong" assessment of the apprentice in light of the other incongruities.

He probably didn't actually mean it, but merely intended to shock/persuade her into behaving since she was drunk and trying to run off. In other words, BUSTED.
Theory time:
I'm thinking that someone, maybe our villainess, approached the prince to plant some sort of attraction charm, but it didn't work (maybe his revulsion caused him to resist/not take) so they erased his memories (which is why he forgot something so traumatic) and cursed him instead...
That was some weird 1930s stuff there.
I think he was aiming to scare her when he threw her on the bed, but when that just encouraged her, he decided to treat her like a child instead.

They did call everybody; priests, magicians, healers and none of them could do anything. She was basically on the death watch so he wouldn't be alone.
