I feel Sharlaan was most likely the traitor for some reason and Smithen just happen to survive nearly dying on the battlefield. If not then I can see both of them though sometimes the first people you suspect aren't always the ones.

So, I know Gabriel falling in the last couple of pages is supposed to show his death though I'm surprised Charles didn't show any emotion toward his son dying right before him. I understand if it's not shown in the manga because it's not important though I am wondering if he was sad his son died.
