I would suggest using they/them as the pronouns that the mother is using, granted she knows the difference at wouldn't use them it makes more sense then using the specific gender in this case.

They are needed for story progression, but at least this isn't just exposition. It's not just backstory but also Philo is experiencing it in realtime (actually Im not sure if thats the right word in this case) so it is still also a continuation of the story at the same time.
