Have to agree with all that, but considering how hard-SF the whole thing is I'm amazed it got done as a manga at all, and considering the nature of adaptations in general I'm amazed that the differences are as small as they are. I actually think it was a better novel than some of his later...

So, a girl is "helping" who doesn't understand what's going on and also can't communicate her misunderstanding of what's going on. I'm trying to figure out if the second part makes things worse or partially cancels out the first part.

Your general point . . . well, could be, although I suspect it won't go more than sort of a compromise, because on one hand the author seems to really like going for some phantasmagorical images but on the other likes rooting it in the characters and their lives. I do want to ask one thing...

I think it would be good if the translators, who I get the impression do not speak English as their first language, were to run their translation through a grammar checker or something. There are quite a few places where it's a bit jarring--connective words left out, verbs wrong and so forth.
