I think the side story in the office was nice and fun, like a comedy skit. Think of watching a disconnected random episode of The Office or "The Full Bulpen" sequence: you don't get what's going on, but as long it's funny, doesn't matter.

That would probably have the opposite effect: if somebody took such measures on a unknown ruin, it means that what's inside is valuable enough to risk making such "noise". It would be better to map the ruin ASAP, strip bare the ruins closest to all but the most unassuming of the entrances and...
